Papaya virus harmless to humans, animals

JOHOR BARU, Sat. - The papaya ring spot virus, which is widespread in south Johor, is harmless to humans and animals, the State Agriculture Department said today.
In a statement, department spokesman Azis Karim affirmed that papaya infected with the virus was still safe for consumption, although the taste and texture might deteriorate.
The department's hotline has been inundated with calls from members of the public wanting to know if they should avoid eating the fruit.
