THERE is this sound of discord which is growing stronger by the day. Shy pop-folk singer Janis Ian is the latest to speak out, causing a surprise by challenging the recording industry's contention that digital downloads hurt music sales.

Ian, best known for her hit At Seventeen, is arguing that free- file sharing services like Napster, Morpheus or KaZaA do not threaten artistes and sales. Instead, she credits them for sparking renewed interest in her music which does not received much radio play.
