PEOPLE around the world celebrate the new year differently. Most people in the United States celebrate by throwing parties on Dec 31. Many stay up all night celebrating with family and friends.

The Chinese New Year is often celebrated for several days, with the auspicious period usually falling between Jan 17 and Feb 19.
This time of feasting and celebration falls on the second new moon after the winter solstice.

The Chinese put up lanterns to illuminate the streets for the New Year. They also believe that evil spirits roam the Earth on New Year, so firecrackers are burned to scare them away.
