ALLERGIES are caused by contact with a certain substance known as an allergen. When an allergen enters the body the first time, the immune system responds by producing a defensive antibody called IgE (Immunoglobulin E). This initial exposure does not produce symptoms, but the IgE antibodies become attached to other defending parts of the immune system - basophils, types of white blood cells or mast cells, which line the skin besides airways and intestines.
On future exposure to the allergen, the programmed antibodies bind to it and prompt the mast cells or basophils to release histamines ...
