AN adoption order granted by the court cements the relationship between the adoptive parents and the child.

The child becomes legally theirs and will be no different from a child born into the family.
The child will be accorded the right to inheritance and the parents would now have duties and obligations towards this child.

However, keeping a child without an adoption order (de facto adoption) is not an offence.

"But then, the question is do you want to be recognised as a legal parent?" asks lawyer Balwant Singh, family law specialist.
