With the death of Althea Gibson, America has lost another great athlete who broke down racial barriers in the 1950s. Like baseball's Larry Doby of Paterson, who passed away earlier this year, Althea Gibson was a role model who was a fierce competitor and gracious champion.

Ms. Gibson not only integrated women's tennis - and became the first black woman to win Wimbledon- but until her death at age 76 this week, she also worked to open doors for the generations that followed.
