When the Casco Bay Bridge opened a few years back, merchants in the Knightville and Mill Creek sections of South Portland didn't breathe easy.

The commercial district was fed by a steady stream of traffic crossing into South Portland over the old Million Dollar Bridge. The new bridge would route traffic around the district, speeding commuters out to residential neighborhoods in South Portland and Cape Elizabeth.
