State Department seeks to restrain Israel

WASHINGTON, Oct 08, 2003 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- The State Department has been trying to get the White House to pressure the Israelis to promise not to violate Syrian airspace the next time they respond to a suicide attack.

But the Bush White House so far has been reluctant to sign off on talking points to U.S. Ambassador Daniel Kurtzer in Israel, despite specific requests from Foggy Bottom. Indeed, the White House has signaled this week that they will lift objections to a wide ranging set of sanctions against Damascus.
