Immigration office workers in the breakaway Turkish Cypriot state went on a one-day strike Thursday to protest what union leaders said was pressure from the Turkish Cypriot administration to grant citizenship to thousands of mainland Turks, a move that they said was aimed at influencing upcoming Turkish Cypriot elections.
