PERTH, Australia (AP) _ In the political furnace that is South African rugby, Joost van der Westhuizen has been a remarkable survivor.

The Springboks' most capped player, who considered his international career over at the start of 2002, leads his country into its opening World Cup match against Uruguay on Saturday night.
