Nearly 1.1 million visitors traveled through heat and rain to attend this
year's Smithsonian Folklife Festival on the National Mall. Festivalgoers
enjoyed a variety of music, crafts and food throughout the 10 days between
June 25 and July 6.
"The 2003 Smithsonian Folklife Festival will go down in history as a
gathering of extraordinary talented artists, particularly musicians from
Appalachia, Scotland and Mali," said Richard Kurin, director of the
Smithsonian's Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage. "More than I
