IT was high noon and Getreidegasse, touted by the locals as "one of the
most attractive streets in the world," was teeming with people.

It did not take us long to figure out one other reason behind the crowd of
tourists in this part of the Old City. It's Getreidegasse 9, specifically
the third floor, where the music genius Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born
and where his first violin and a hammer piano are exhibited.

For a city that began its development in medieval times by winning salt,
Salzburg was one of the places in Austria that prospered economically
shortly after the invasions by the Romans and the war-like Germans.
