THE South Dakota International Business Institute (SDIBI) had to begin
screening calls from Irish people in New York interested in moving to the
western state to build farms because of the overwhelming response.

The state of South Dakota in the Rocky Mountain region sent a team of
recruiters to Ireland last month in the hope that they could entice Irish
farmers to the prairies to bring 65,000 cows to supply milk to a cheese
plant.

The state, home to Mount Rushmore, is in desperate need of farmers to meet
the milk demands of their expanding dairy processing industry. The Irish
were eager to apply. Too eager, it seems.
