Friday, October 31, 2003 -- Prime Minister Ariel Sharon will not ask Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Moshe Ya'alon to resign because of Ya'alon's recent criticism of the government's policies in the territories, government officials said Thursday.

Ya'alon sparked the controversy by telling columnists on Tuesday that Israel should have been more generous in gestures made to former Palestinian Authority prime minister Mahmoud Abbas, and that the failure to do so contributed to Abbas's downfall.
