NSW: Premier Carr to go ahead with Ashrawi peace prize award

SYDNEY, Nov 2 AAP - NSW Premier Bob Carr today stood by his decision to present Australia's
only international peace prize to an outspoken Palestinian activist.

The Sydney Peace Prize jury unanimously awarded the prize in August to Hanan Ashrawi,
a Palestinian academic and human rights campaigner.

The choice has drawn heated opposition from sections of Sydney's Jewish community,
and Sydney Lord Mayor Lucy Turnbull has said she will boycott the presentation ceremony.

A senior Australian Army officer has said the choice betrayed soldiers in Baghdad.
