Fed: New gear for Australian Defence Force

The Australian Defence Force is to buy new tanks and ships and retire the elderly F-111
bombers by 2010.

Defence Minister ROBERT HILL says the aim is to achieve a balanced defence force able
to defend Australia and deal with unconventional threats like terrorism.

He says the changes will be financed from the existing defence budget.

The army's 25-year-old Leopard tanks will also be replaced, but a new model ...
