The navy has escorted 14 asylum seekers back to Indonesia after their small, wooden fishing boat was stopped last week in waters off the coast of northern Australia, officials said Sunday.

Indonesian police said they arrested the 14, who claim to be Turkish Kurds, on arrival at the island of Yamdena, and were now questioning them. However, the four Indonesian crew who accompanied the asylum seekers managed to escape on foot.

The asylum seekers were stopped last Tuesday in waters off Australia's Melville Island near the coast of the Northern Territory.
