When she was born on Aug. 25, 1927, in Silver, S.C., Althea Gibson had
three strikes against her: she was poor; she was Black; she was a woman. In
time, Althea Gibson lifted herself above the poverty that clung to her as a
child growing up in Harlem. In time, Althea Gibson rose above the harsh
realities of racism and a segregated society. In time, Althea Gibson became
a champion for Black women and all women around the world.

Sunday, September 28, Althea Gibson, after spending 76 years on earth in
this thing called "life," left us for another life. For sure, her place in
her new life had been reserved. A place reserved for pioneers. A place
