AS WE PREPARE TO celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends, let us recall the 60th anniversary of the invasion of Tarawa, Nov. 20, 1943.

In our official military history it is written that with the exception of Iwo Jima, Tarawa's beaches "were better protected against a landing force than any encountered in any theater of war throughout the Second World War."
