A federal appeals court upheld a more than 31-year prison sentence against a convicted drug smuggler who authorities say was the "right-hand man" of the former leaders of Mexico's largest drug gang.
Carlos Duran Montoya, alias "The Frog," was convicted of heading a band of hit men affiliated with the Arellano Felix smuggling syndicate, based in the border city of Tijuana. He was sentenced to 30 years and 510 days in prison on drugs, organized crime and weapons charges, a ruling which was upheld by a court in the western city of Guadalajara on Tuesday, according to a statement released by the federal attorney general's office.
