Robert McMichael, who with his wife turned an interest in art into one of the world's largest collections of distinctively Canadian works, has died at age 82.

The McMichael Gallery of Canadian Art, started by McMichael and his wife, Signe, announced Wednesday that McMichael died Tuesday of pneumonia resulting from complications from a broken hip.

Located in a village north of Toronto, the gallery features works of the Group of Seven from the early 20th century, considered one of the first uniquely Canadian art movements.
