Tropical Storm Odette gathered strength and speed Saturday as it took aim at the Dominican Republic, packing 65-mph (105-kph) winds and threatening to unleash deadly mudslides and floods that also could afflict Haiti.

With the heaviest of the torrential rains nearing the southern Dominican coast, officials began evacuating residents along the banks of swelling rivers and opened the floodgates of three northern dams.
