Thousands of people abandoned their homes Saturday as Tropical Storm Odette's torrential rains began to lash the Dominican Republic, threatening deadly floods and mudslides that also could afflict Haiti.
As the storm churned off the southern Dominican coast, officials evacuated residents along the banks of swelling rivers and opened the floodgates of three northern dams.
More than 10,000 people had been evacuated from low-lying southeastern areas, said Julian Pena, governor of Barahona province. Residents also were being advised to leave homes in some northern areas.
