NSW: Engineer backs wrought iron rail bridges

SYDNEY, Dec 9 AAP - NSW's wrought iron rail bridges won a vote of confidence today
from the engineer who led an investigation into a key bridge closed for fear of collapse.
Monash University Emeritus Professor Paul Grundy told the Australian Bridges Conference
in Sydney that the laminated nature of wrought iron stopped the growth of fatigue cracks.
Wrought iron also had an endurance limit much higher than steel, he said.
Prof Grundy gave a history of the 140-year-old Menangle rail bridge, which was closed
earlier this year after a report warned it was in danger of "catastrophic" ...
