After decades of enforced separation, Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriot opposition share the hope that Sunday's parliamentary election on the island's Turkish side will lead to the reunification of Cyprus and its entry into the European Union.
The election involving 140,000 voters in Turkish-occupied north Cyprus has become something of a referendum on a reunification plan by U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
The result could have implications beyond this small Mediterranean island, likely affecting Turkey's own hopes of joining the EU and strained relations between NATO members Greece and Turkey.
