Analysis: Saddam Hussein captured by US forces near his hometown of Tikrit

From NPR News in Washington, DC, I'm Liane Hansen with special coverage.

In the words of President Bush, in a speech he gave earlier from the Cabinet Room of the White House, `the capture of Saddam Hussein marks the end of a dark and painful era in Iraq.' Saddam Hussein was captured just outside his hometown of Tikrit late last night. He was captured by members of the 4th Infantry Division. He offered no resistance, and is now in American custody. The official announcement was made by the US administrator in Iraq, Paul Bremer.
