Fed: Three quit Nauru hunger strike

CANBERRA, Dec 30 AAP - A United Nations promise to review refugee claims in light of
the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan has convinced three asylum-seekers to withdraw
from a hunger strike.

Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone welcomed the detainees' decision to accept food and water.

"The fact that three people have ended their hunger strike is a really good sign," she said.

"It's hopeful but I can't say much more than that."

However, 42 men detained on Nauru continued to refuse food and water today as the hunger
strike entered its 20th day.
