New Year's Eve celebrations in Maine bars tonight are likely to be pretty smoky. It's the last chance, after all, that smokers will have to enjoy the freedom to puff inside taverns before the state's ban on smoking in bars goes into effect.

The Legislature can't force people to adopt healthy lifestyles, but it can try to protect people from the unhealthy lifestyles of others. Smoking affects more than the one who's taking the drag. People who sit next to eaters of fast food don't absorb calories ...
