A strong earthquake rattled western Japan on Monday, the Meteorological Agency said. Police said there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The earthquake registered a preliminary magnitude of 5.2 and was centered 40 kilometers (25 miles) beneath the seabed, just off the coast of Mie prefecture (state). The temblor was felt most strongly near Ise city, about 320 kilometers (200 miles) southwest of Tokyo.
