A longstanding obstacle for the small cadre of American Jews involved in
interfaith dialogue has been the opposition by some Orthodox participants
to engage in "theological" discussions with their Christian counterparts.

While Judaism's Reform and Conservative movements have no problem
discussing theological issues with other faith groups, an issue arises when
the three major denominations unite for interfaith dialogue. (Interfaith
dialogue is off the radar screen for the fervently Orthodox and chasidic
communities.)

That's when some Modern Orthodox dialoguers raise the issue of "the ban."
