Today, in an era of on-line news services, 24-hour all-news radio, cable TV
stations and other technological marvels that deliver information at the
touch of a button, it's difficult to imagine a time when New York's Black
citizens had only a community weekly newspaper to learn of events that
addressed their information needs, social concerns and aspirations.

On Dec. 4, 1909, when the New York Amsterdam News was born, the despicable
