The Pirates were working Monday to complete a trade that would send catcher Jason Kendall to the Padres for third baseman Jeff Cirillo and catcher Ramon Hernandez, The Associated Press has learned.
The teams were close to making a deal last summer, shortly after the Pirates dealt outfielder Brian Giles to the Padres. Then, the two sides couldn't agree on how much of the remaining $42 million of Kendall's contract Pittsburgh would pick up.
