Dutch deny waging war on white socks

THE HAGUE, Netherlands, Jan 14, 2004 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- Dutch Finance Ministry officials insist they are not the fashion police and deny media reports they have declared war on white socks.

The reports suggested white socks were banned after being accused by a senior official of "transgressing the limits of decent dress behavior."

A ministry spokeswoman told the BBC the statement was mere personal opinion, expressed in an interview in a staff magazine.

But, she revealed, the comments were not controversial at the ministry.
