Air New Zealand announced Friday plans to slash fares to the Pacific Islands from the middle of the year, expanding a cut-price flight formula it uses to Australia and for domestic routes.

Based on fare reductions for economy flights to Australia, travelers can expect South Pacific destination fares to drop an average 20 percent, spokesman Mark Street said.

Air New Zealand currently flies more than 100,000 people between New Zealand and South Pacific destinations each year. Tens of thousands of people from the impoverished island nations of the region live and work in New Zealand, but maintain close links to their homelands.
