We say goodbye to the great lady Althea Gibson, the first African American
tennis champion of the world, who broke the color barrier in tennis and
golf and set the stage for a younger generation of blacks to succeed. Some
of the younger ones she paved the way for are Venus and Serena Williams,
Tiger Woods and Arthur Ashe.
Gibson dominated women's tennis from 1956 through 1958, winning 11 grand
slam titles: five in singles, five in doubles, and one in mixed doubles.
She did this in the time when everything was segregated and she overcame
great obstacles on her way to being a tennis star.
