The top ten cruise lines carried 8.3 million passengers on 3,840 North
American cruises in 2003, up 8 percent over 2002, the U.S. Maritime Administration
(MARAD) reported today.
The highest growth rates among the top ten departure ports occurred in
New York and Galveston, which recorded increases of 45 percent and 39 percent
respectively in 2003. However, the traffic remains heavily concentrated
at the major departure ports, which are located in Florida. Miami, Port
Canaveral, and Fort Lauderdale accounted for 49 percent of the total cruise
passenger traffic.
