Any Cyprus settlement must have exceptions from basic European Union laws, the Turkish Cypriot leader said Wednesday on the eve of a new round of talks for the reunification of this war-divided island.
Rauf Denktash said he will discuss the issue with Guenter Verheugen, the EU expansion commissioner, who will be in Cyprus for the start of the United Nations-sponsored talks for ending the 30-year division of the island.
"We will talk to him about derogations and how these can become primary (EU) law, which is for us a very serious matter," he said.
