Analysis: Spirit rover moves onto martian soil

Mission engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena got a welcomed transmission from Mars this morning.

Unidentified Man: We have carrier in line.

EDWARDS: Shortly after 2 AM Pacific time, 5 AM Eastern, engineers got initial confirmation that the rover named Spirit has six wheels sitting on the martian soil. Until today the rover was perched about 16 inches above the surface on the lander that carried it safely to Mars. Now it's on the ground, ready to start its geological exploration. NPR's ...
