Fed: Truss warns live exporters to lift animal welfare standards

CANBERRA, March 2 AAP - Live animal exporters were warned today they would lose their
licences if they failed to improve welfare standards for their shipments.

Agriculture Minister Warren Truss, addressing the Australian Bureau of Agricultural
and Resource Economics conference, said it would be the exporters and not farmers who
would pay the price for poor animal welfare standards.

This follows a damning report into the industry, which warned conditions had to be
improved following the stranding of the Cormo Express in the Persian Gulf for more than
a month last year.
