The two leaders of the divided Mediterranean island of Cyprus met with a senior U.N. official for reunification talks Wednesday, but both emerged from the talks blaming the other of impeding progress.

Greek Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash have until March 22 to agree to a reunification plan by U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Denktash came out of his talks with Sir Kieran Prendergast, the deputy secretary-general of the United Nations, saying his Greek Cypriot opponents were "shying away from negotiations."
