Maybe Adrian Beltre should pretend every month is August.

If it worked, he'd certainly be a better hitter.

Beltre has been a notorious slow starter in his big league career with Los Angeles, batting .249 with 38 home runs and 164 RBIs before the All-Star break and .274 with 61 homers and 225 RBIs afterward.

The third baseman's been at his best in August, batting .293 with 26 homers and 98 RBIs.

He just can't explain it.

"It just happens," Beltre said with a puzzled look on his face. "It baffles me. I want to be consistent from the first day to the last day of the season.

"It's a strange thing. I don't know how to explain ...
