One of the eight suspects indicted in Serbia's first major war crimes case died Monday at a prison hospital, a day before the start of the landmark trial, a court official said.

The suspect, Mirko Vojinovic, died of injuries sustained two months ago when he jumped from a hospital window in what was described as a suicide attempt, said the prosecution spokesman, Bruno Vekaric.

Vojinovic was a member of a Serb paramilitary unit in the eastern Croatian town of Vukovar during the 1991 fighting there. He was among eight Serbs charged in December with the killing of about 200 Croat prisoners ...
