Cleaning of a Michelangelo 'Pieta' done

MILAN, Italy, Mar 10, 2004 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- Cleaning of Michelangelo's last sculpture, the Rondanini Pieta, has been completed after five years of preliminary research and four months of work.

The sculpture went on display again this week at the Sforza Castle without encumbering work platforms.

The famed unfinished sculpture, started about 1550, remained on display throughout the cleaning with distilled water so that the public could watch the process of removing varnish, calcium deposits, oil, and dirt from the surface of the marble.
