Government troops armed with automatic weapons opened fire on a village in the oil-rich Niger Delta this week, killing 51 people, a local activist group said Saturday. The military denied the claim.

The alleged attack occurred at dawn Tuesday in Fenegbene, a village near the southern city of Warri, the Federated Niger Delta Ijaw Communities group said.

At least 79 people were wounded in the attack, said Bello Oboko, the Ijaw group's leader.
