Several U.S. citizens visiting El Salvador to help monitor presidential elections were detained on Friday and Saturday at the airport by Salvadoran immigration officials, a U.S. Embassy official said Sunday.
About 80 U.S. citizens were detained temporarily, including election monitors, members of religious groups and tourists, an embassy representative said. By Sunday afternoon, everyone had passed into the country except one person, who did carry the required paperwork.
