Barack Obama, a Harvard-educated state senator and son of a Kenyan economist, easily won the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate in Illinois, setting up a high-stakes race in November that could affect the balance of power in Congress.

Obama had 562,495 votes, or 55 percent, to 225,834 votes, or 22 percent, for state Comptroller Dan Hynes in voting Tuesday.

Republican Jack Ryan, a millionaire investment banker-turned-teacher, defeated seven other candidates to capture the GOP nomination. With 79 percent of precincts reporting, Ryan had 156,953 votes, or 36 percent,
