Claus Riedel, an Austrian wine glassmaker who pioneered the use of differently shaped glasses for different wines, has died, his company said. He was 79.

Born into the ninth generation of glassmakers, Riedel started up a glass factory with his father in Kufstein, Austria, in 1955.

Riedel said that existing glasses were too small to allow fine wines top achieve their fullest flavors. He launched delicate, thin, long-stemmed glasses as an alternative.

Riedel found from experiments that the same wines taste different, depending on the glass used.
