GENOA, Italy - Claus Riedel, an Austrian who pioneered and made glasses in different shapes according to the variety of wine being consumed, has died, his company said. He was 79.

Born into the ninth generation of glassmakers, Mr. Riedel opened a glass factory with his father in Kufstein, Austria, in 1955.

Mr. Riedel said that existing glasses were too small to allow fine wines to achieve their fullest flavors.
