She has never dropped out of a marathon, and darned if she wanted to start at age 46, on the 20th anniversary of her golden summer.
The U.S. Olympic trials for the women's marathon are Saturday in St. Louis - without Joan Benoit Samuelson of Freeport.
A painful Achilles' tendon proved too bothersome for Samuelson, who had incorporated more cross country skiing and biking into her training routine in an effort to pamper her tender heel.
