Black women's role in the black church has significantly changed since the
Reconstruction era, a change that has been both a blessing and a curse for
them.

Since the inception of the first black church in 1778, the role of African
American women has been one of servitude and missionary. Their presence in
the church, while standing in the shadows of black men at a time African
Americans were working to whittle away racial prejudice, was limited.

Despite the political force female participation and activism brought to
the church, African American women were quietly dealing with a "dual issue"
within their own race.
